Casal da Monteira

The history of Casal da Monteira is woven by individuals who, day after day and generation after generation, contribute to the continuous growth of the brand and the family, always rooted in their land and their wine.

Located in Casal da Monteira, in Arruda dos Vinhos, this producer, named after its location, already has five generations dedicated to growing vines and producing wine. Close to the iconic Monte do Gigante, Casal da Monteira seeks to combine History and Wine with traditional mastery, actively investing in the modernisation and expansion of its facilities.

The fifth generation decided to honour their land by giving their name to the wine they produce, resulting in the Casal da Monteira wine, founded by João Farrobilha. Actively involved in vineyard life from an early age, João knew that his path would lead him that way. It was inspired by the history of his land, driven by a strong determination to work, and motivated by a deep desire to honour his own, that he took over the family legacy - the vineyards and the wine.

Legend of the Giant's Grave

In times gone by, the people of the Arruda valley were tormented by a fearsome giant. He was so huge and monstrous that he devoured everything around him at once, from herds of cattle and sheep to unsuspecting people, whom he swallowed with cruelty. Afterwards, he would clean his teeth with ploughs and take a nap on a full stomach. His snoring was so terrifying that the houses shook around him. With this terrible creature around, the inhabitants of Arruda would never have peace.

That was until, one stormy afternoon, a lady from Lugar da Monteira who had ventured out to collect her cattle was confronted by the formidable Giant, ready to devour her. With no other recourse for defence, she knelt down, raised her hands and appealed to the heavens. At that very moment, the Giant was struck by lightning.

Unable to remove the huge, pestilential body, the people rushed to cover it with baskets of earth until he took on the shape of an elongated mound, similar to a large grave: this is how the Cova do Gigante came to be.
