 WHAT TO VISIT

Church of Santa Maria do Castelo

A national monument, it is one of the great Gothic symbols of Lourinhã. The current structure dates back to the reign of King João, with a wide nave, elegant ogival arches and distinct capitals. In the chancel, the coats of arms, the Manueline niche and the stonemason's marks stand out. The portico facing the sea, with its rose window and historiated archivolts, and the north door with scallop shells evoke pilgrimage routes. At the viewpoint, the 16th-century cross opens up the view to the Atlantic.

 WHAT TO DO

Battle of Vimeiro Interpretation Centre

Highlighting the historical and military heritage of the Peninsular War, it is located on the very battlefield of 1808. The collection brings together unique weaponry, uniforms, documents and archaeological finds, supported by regular cultural programming and resources accessible to all. Here we discover Wellesley's innovative tactics, the pioneering use of Shrapnel ammunition and the outcome of the First French Invasion.
